San Juan Island's Original Sea Kayak Outfitters & Guides Since 1980

2 Day Whale Sanctuary

Our Two-Day Whale Sanctuary overnighter is all about paddling with orca whales in the wild!

This adventure offers the best in pristine coastline and easy mileage and spends two days in the orca lanes of Haro Strait’s proposed Federal Whale Sanctuary! With Canada’s Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands as backdrops, we will ply the waters known as home to our three local pods of orca whales. With guides experienced in orca behavior and natural history, your experience will be safe and educational and a ton of fun! We have been paddling with whales for 37 years, so please join us for a close encounter!

This area also abounds with porpoise, harbor seals, bald eagles, otters, fox and stellar sea lions! An added bonus in recent years is the influx of humpback whales to island waters. These 50 ton giants are more and more a regular staple of both our day and multi-day trips.

If we get our fill of whales by day two, we will paddle back into history with a stop at British Camp National Park. Here we will explore the British garrison built in the 1800’s, marvel at the seventh largest maple tree in the United States and hike to the top of Young Hill with spectacular panoramas of Canada’s Vancouver Island, the Olympic Mountain Range and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Our campsite is a small, cozy island reserved just for San Juan Kayak Expeditions and accessible only by sea kayak! We will enjoy a spectacular sunset paddle, watch the last light of day obscure Vancouver Island, British Columbia and its’ capital Victoria then swap stories around the campfire! We will wake to the sound of Black Oystercatchers and Great Blue Herons just outside our tent doors and arise to find breakfast on the table and a steaming mocha ready to jump-start your day!
